Monticello, Minnesota is located at the intersection of Interstate 94 and State Highway 25, nestled along the south bank of the Mississippi River, less than an hour’s drive north from the Twin Cities Metro area and 25 minutes south of St. Cloud. Just 3 miles away, northeast of the Mississippi River, Monticello's nearest neighboring community, Big Lake, is located 3 miles north on State Highway 10 with Buffalo, 9 miles south on State Highway 55.

Monticello, Minnesota is a progressive and growing community with a small town atmosphere located in Wright County on the scenic Mississippi River. Based on the 2010 U.S. census data, the City of Monticello's population is 12,759 with a total of 4,693 households. The median age is 31.4. The largest age group is children under 5 (10%) followed by the 30-to-34-year-olds at 9%. The City's total population includes 49.2% males and 50.8% females comprised of 92.6% white, 5.4% Hispanic/Latino and 1.5% African American.

The City of Monticello is the fourth largest in Wright County, Minnesota behind St. Michael (pop. 16,400) Buffalo (pop. 15,453) and Otsego (pop. 13,571) and is also larger than neighboring Big Lake City (pop. 10,060) and Albertville (pop. 7,044). Of the City's households 72% are owner-occupied and nearly 28% are renter-occupied.

Monticello City is governed by a Mayor/Council form of local government and the Township by its board. Law enforcement services are provided by contract with the Wright County Sheriff's Office and fire protection is provided by a well-trained volunteer Monticello fire department. The City has implemented comprehensive land use planning and citizens serve on numerous local advisory boards and commissions assisting city staff with the tasks associated with helping the community grow in a well-planned and coordinated manner.

The City of Monticello built its own city-wide fiber optics network in 2009 and provides 100% fiber optic Internet, digital telephone and TV throughout the city limits.

New River Medical Center serves the community with its health services. This is a community owned hospital with an eight-member elected Board of Directors. Board members are elected by and represent the residents of Becker Township, Big Lake City and Township, Monticello City and Township, Otsego City and Silver Creek Township.

The city of Monticello prides itself for preserving and developing green space into more than 24 city parks including city-wide paved pathways for walking and biking which now stretches over 14 miles. This pathway system compliments a Wright County park located inside the city limits (Montissippi Park), Lake Maria State Park and Harry Larson Country Park located just 7 miles west of town.
