Monticello is a progressive and forward thinking city with a population of 12,759 at the 2010 census. In 2009 the city built its own fiber optic network throughout the entire city limits offering high-speed Internet, telephone and digital TV. Monticello enjoys more than 14 miles of paved pathways for walking, jogging and bicycles, more than 24 city parks and one county park all inside the city limits. Recently they have been adding acres if a regional park called the Bertram Chain of Lakes that includes more than 1200 acres and 4 lakes. The City is working on a new plan for downtown Monticello's economic development and continues to draw interest related to its residential and commercial growth. The City of Monticello enjoys annual winter visits from more than 1,300 Trumpeter Swans. They arrive mid-November and stay through February or early March depending on the weather. Monticello is unique in that open waters remain on the Mississippi River during winter months which allows the Trumpeter swans to make Monticello their winter getaway. You may view the swans at a small city park located on Mississippi Drive.
